Wetpaint is looking for a Rock Star DevOps engineer to take an important role in building, automating and evolving the software, infrastructure, and technologies that drive our products. Our software development team will be counting on your creativity and perspective to design and implement the best architecture and environment in which to develop, test and provision our products. You will become part of a next-generation media and technology startup with a culture of continuous revolution. In 24 months, we built a media property with over 15 million monthly readers, growing twice as fast as Huffington Post in their early days. We earned the trust of over three million engaged Facebook fans. Today, Wetpaint gets more social traffic than the New York Times, MTV, and Washington Post. The main enabler behind that is our world class technology infrastructure, which is comprised of complex systems that can spot emergent trends before they are picked up anywhere else, handicap content for the amount of traffic it will drive, and figure out where, when and how to best merchandise this content across channels – web, mobile, and social. At the heart of these systems, which we refer to as our Platform, is a core focus on using data collection, analytics, machine learning, and optimization techniques on data from a variety of sources. Wetpaint is currently ranked the #4 Startup in Seattle (out of 100) by Startup City. This role will focus on maintaining and expanding our existing Puppet infrastructure towards automating everything from initial server provisioning, application deployment to all dev/test/production environments, and monitoring of these services using Nagios. Some of the things you'll be doing include:

  • Participate in the design, implementation, and maintenance of the Ruby on Rails, Python, and Java applications that make up our service.
  • Work with the development, QA, and Operations teams to automate manual steps in development and deployment processes
  • Work with the development, QA, and Operations team to ensure adequate level of health monitoring for all production systems, including hardware, server components and deployed applications
  • Design, implement, and test disaster recovery capability for all business critical services

Skills & Experience

  • Sound technical understanding of the use and administration of various Linux distributions
  • Very strong shell scripting skills
  • Adept at administering and customizing Puppet installations
  • Experience installing, configuring and maintaining PostgreSQL systems (including hot standby replication setups)
  • Experience installing, configuring and maintaining MySQL systems
  • 1+ years of experience supporting 24X7, high availability internet application environments that include web, application and database servers and load balancing systems
  • Be able to communicate effectively in an enjoyable way, even (and especially) when disagreeing
  • Know how to have a great time at work

Additional Skills Desired

  • 2+ years of experience with Nagios monitoring
  • 1+ years of experience with F5/Cisco hardware
  • Experience building Ruby on Rails, Python and Java applications
  • Experience using Varnish HTTP Proxy software
  • Versatile self-starter with an eye for detail and a strong sense of ownership
  • Generalist: someone who constantly learns new technologies to find the best tool for the current task
  • Comfort working in a highly collaborative, agile development environment
